A Healthy Initiative for Singareni
With the encouragement and support of ShriBalramNaikGaru, IRS, Chairman & Managing Director, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), a practical health initiative was introduced to help employees understand the importance of yoga, movement, hydration, healthy habits, and preventive care.
With around 71,000 employees and their families, promoting good health can create a positive impact across the entire Singareni community.
The programme brings together traditional yogic knowledge and modern scientific understanding and presents health concepts in a simple, practical way that employees can understand and follow in everyday life.
Yoga Is More Than Asana
Yoga is not limited to asana, pranayama, and meditation.
It is a comprehensive approach to healthy living, physical activity, breathing, relaxation, awareness, discipline, and overall well-being.
Winter & Heart Health
Winter Can Put Extra Stress on the Heart
Cold weather can cause blood vessels to narrow. This may increase blood pressure and make the heart work harder.
Reduced physical activity, dehydration, and changes in daily routines may also affect our health during winter.
Who Should Take Extra Care?
- Older adults
- People with existing heart conditions
- People with high blood pressure
- People who are less physically active
- People who are especially sensitive to cold
Winter may increase cardiovascular risk for some people. Stay alert, stay warm, and maintain healthy daily habits.
Our Amazing Heart
❤️The heart is a powerful pump that works continuously throughout our lives.
- Pumps approximately 8,000 litres of blood a day
- Beats more than 100,000 times a day
- Works continuously, day and night
- Supplies oxygen and nutrients throughout the body
- Works together with an extensive network of blood vessels (100,000 KM).
Take care of your heart — and encourage your family to do the same.
The “Second Heart” — Calf Muscles
Our calf muscles play an important role in helping blood return from the legs toward the heart.
Walking + Leg Movement = Active Calf Muscles
Regular walking and movement can support circulation and reduce the effects of prolonged sitting.
Six Simple Winter Practices
1. Warm Water 💧
Start Your Day Comfortably
Drink a comfortable amount of warm water in the morning and stay adequately hydrated throughout the day.
Remember:
- Supports hydration
- Supports normal body functions
- Supports digestion
- Helps maintain comfort during cold weather
Vasodilation
Vasodilation means the relaxation and widening of blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily.
Important: Warm water is not a treatment for heart disease and does not guarantee prevention of heart attacks.
2. Walk Every 60–90 Minutes 🚶
If you sit for long periods, get up and walk for 5-10 minutes every 60-90 minutes.
Keep Your Calf Muscles Active
Walking can help:
✓ Activate calf muscles ✓ Support circulation ✓ Reduce prolonged sitting ✓ Improve mobility ✓ Keep the body active
Don’t sit for hours without moving.
3. Gentle Calf Massage 🦵
A gentle calf massage may help your legs feel relaxed and comfortable during winter.
During winter, coconut oil or a suitable moisturizer may also help with dry and itchy skin.
4. Wear Comfortable Clothing 🧥
Keep your body warm while allowing comfortable movement.
Choose clothing that:
✓ Keeps you warm ✓ Allows easy movement ✓ Is comfortable around the waist and legs
Avoid unnecessarily tight clothing, belts, or bands.
5. Keep Your Room Comfortable 🔥
Some people may need additional warmth during winter, especially older adults and people sensitive to cold.
If You Use a Room Heater:
✓ Keep it at a safe distance ✓ Keep flammable materials away ✓ Never cover the heater ✓ Follow the manufacturer's safety instructions ✓ Maintain a comfortable room temperature
Safety First!
6. Keep Warm Water Available 🫗
Keep drinking water nearby when travelling, working at a desk, or sitting in an air-conditioned room.
- Travelling
- Working at a desk
- Sitting in an air-conditioned room
- Spending long hours away from home
A flask can be convenient for carrying warm water.
Remember:
Warm water does not literally “thin the blood.”
Its main benefits are hydration and comfort.
Keep Your Feet Warm and Safe
During winter:
🧦 Keep your feet warm and dry 🩴 Wear comfortable slippers 🧘 Use a thick floor mat if the floor is cold ⚠️ Be careful on slippery floors 👴 Older adults should take extra care to prevent falls
